Undesirable and Bad Conduct discharges may or may not qualify depending upon special determination made by the VA based on facts of each case. The veteran must have had at least ninety (90) days of service, one day of which must have been during a period of war time. A peace-time veteran entitled to service connected compensation at the time of death or discharged or retired for disability incurred in time of duty may also be entitled this benefit. The County may pay if the veteran has an estate value less than $25,000 - the homestead is now exempt - they require tax bills on all other properties since they become a part of the estate. NATURE OF BENEFITSVETERANS ADMINISTRATION ALLOWANCES, VETERANS BENEFITS PAID AS FOLLOWS:
Except for those who die in a VA facility, the payment of the $150 plot allowance and the $300 burial and funeral expense benefit will be made only in the case of deceased veterans who were receiving a VA compensation or pension benefit, or who would be deemed to have been so entitled if the evidence on file on the date of death was sufficient to support a determination of entitlement. In addition, the transportation costs will be paid where death occurs in a VA facility. The transportation allowance will be within limits prescribed by the VA. The $150 plot allowance will not be paid when an eligible veteran is buried in a national or other cemetery under the jurisdiction of the United States or in cemetery space provided by another unit of government. The payment of a burial allowance up to $1,500.00 when a veteran dies as a result of a service connected disability will be continued. The VA will continue to provide a flag and marker to all Veterans. COUNTY BENEFITSThe County may pay $300 toward the deceased veteran's funeral bill when application is made in the county the veteran resided in at the time of death. If County burial allowance is approved, a separate application reimbursement of setting of Government Headstone may be filed by bringing a paid receipt from the cemetery only. Charges for same must not be included in itemized funeral bill. Both applications must be completed by claimant within two (2) years from date of death.
